The federal government is providing a one-time non-taxable $500 payment to assist eligible Canadians who pay more than 30% of their income for rental housing, and the application process for that benefit is now open.
This one-time supplement to the Canada Housing Benefit is available to individuals who had a net income for 2021 of $20,000 or less, or families who had income for that year of $35,000 or less, where such individuals and families paid more than 30% of their income for rent in 2021.
Details of the supplement program, including an online application, can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency website. Applications must be made on or before Friday, March 31, 2023.
