The “grocery rebate” was introduced as an increase to the maximum goods and services tax credit/harmonized sales tax (GSTC/HST) credit amount for January 2023. Eligible individuals would receive an additional GST/HST credit amount equivalent to twice the amount already received for January 2023.
The federal government has released additional details of the “grocery rebate” which was announced in the 2023 federal Budget. That rebate is scheduled to be paid to eligible Canadians on July 5, 2023.
The federal government release states that the grocery rebate will be double the amount of any GST/HST tax credit received by an individual in January 2023. Specifically, single individuals without children can receive a maximum of $234, while married individuals without children can receive a maximum of $306. For both groups, the maximum rebate receivable increases with family size.
You will receive the Grocery Rebate if you were entitled to receive the GST/HST credit for January 2023. To get the Grocery Rebate, you have to file a tax return for 2021, even if you have no income to report for that year. Additionally, you and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must meet the eligibility criteria for the 2021 base year to qualify for this rebate.
The eligibility criteria are you are a resident of Canada for income tax purposes at the beginning of the month in which the CRA makes a payment (see When your GST/HST credit is paid). And in the month before the CRA makes a quarterly payment, you must be at least 19 years old. If you are under 19 years old, you must meet at least one of the following conditions during the same period:
You have (or had) a spouse or common-law partner.
You are (or were) a parent and live (or lived) with your child.
