Everyone has questions regarding taxes, but reaching the CRA to get answers hasn’t always been easy. If you have general tax questions, this could be great for you!
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides taxpayers with several telephone help lines, through which taxpayers can obtain both general tax information and information specific to their tax situation.
The CRA’s Tax Information Phone Service (TIPS) line is an automated service which provides taxpayers with information about the status of their income tax refund, RRSP and TFSA contribution limits, and any income tax balance owing. The TIPS line can be reached at 1-800-267-6999.
Taxpayers who are seeking information which is not available through TIPS can call the CRA’s Individual Income Tax Enquiries line at 1-800-959-8281 and speak to a customer service agent.
In order to access personal tax information through either TIPS or the Individual Income Tax Enquiries line, callers must satisfy the CRA’s information security requirements by providing basic personal and tax information, starting with their name, address, and social insurance number. Details of those information security requirements, as well as the hours of operation for the CRA’s telephone help lines, can be found on the Agency’s website at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/tax-information-phone-service-tips.html and Individual tax enquiries line – Canada.ca. Real-time information on wait times for the help lines is available at Contact the Canada Revenue Agency – Canada.ca.
