March 31, 2023 is the deadline for claiming the top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit.
In 2022, the federal government announced the creation of a top-up to the existing Canada Housing Benefit, which would provide a one-time payment of $500 to lower-income individuals who pay a disproportionate share of their income for rental accommodation.
Generally, the Benefit is available to Canadian families who have a family income of less than $35,000 for 2021 or single individuals who have an income of less than $20,000 for that year. In addition, recipients must have, during 2022, paid rent in an amount equal to at least 30% of their 2021 income.
The Canada Revenue Agency has issued a reminder to eligible taxpayers that the deadline to apply for the Canada Housing Benefit is Friday, March 31, 2023.
