In its 2023-24 budget, the federal government announced that to assist Canadians coping with recent inflationary increases in the cost of food, it would be providing a one-time “grocery rebate”.
The grocery rebate program is automatic and no application is needed.
The Canada Revenue Agency has indicated on its website that the grocery rebate will be delivered to eligible taxpayers in conjunction with the existing GST/HST tax credit, and that payment of the grocery rebate is tentatively scheduled to be made on July 5, 2023.
Beware of any texts or emails regarding the grocery rebate program. The CRA warns that it does not, in any circumstances, communicate with taxpayers by text or email or on social media and that all such messages should be deleted without responding. The Agency indicated that the “grocery rebate” will, like all similar payments from the federal government, be paid through direct deposit to the recipient’s bank account. Where the taxpayer has not authorized direct deposit, a cheque for the rebate will be sent by regular mail.
